How to become a BIS certified

Under the Product Certification Scheme, Indian manufacturers can receive their BIS certification. While the Compulsory Registration Scheme allows makers of electronics and IT products to receive their BIS licences (BIS CRS). By hiring an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR), who will be in charge of the documents and entire certification process, foreign producers can receive their BIS licences.

Who is eligible for BIS Certification

Anyone who manufactures goods listed in the Compulsory Registration Order, whether they are based in India or abroad, is eligible to apply for BIS Certification under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS).

For each product being produced in a new location, manufacturers must submit a separate Registration number application.

For each brand being produced at the same facility, manufacturers must submit a separate Registration number application.

Process for BIS Certification

• Documentation and application form completion on the BIS portal.
• BIS staff scrutinise the application and supporting materials.
• A BIS-appointed auditor performed a factory audit.
• Product sample obtained from a BIS-recognized lab for testing.
• BIS starts the licence issuing process if the product sample test result meets with the necessary Indian criteria.

Timeline & Validity of BIS CRS and ISI Registration: 

• Including testing time, the period required for BIS Registration will be around 30 to 35 days (15-20 days)
• The BIS issues certificates that are valid for two years and can be renewed after that.

1. How long is the renewed BIS licence valid?

Ans: The BIS licence must be renewed every two years and must remain in effect for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years.

Q: Does the BIS act of 2016 encompass hallmarking as well?

A: Yes. The hallmarking is covered under the BIS Act of 2016. It is principally governed by BIS (Hallmarking) regulations, which were published in 2018 and set forth rules for jewellers' registration, refineries' licence issuance, and the recognition of Assaying and Hallmarking Centers.
